Towy Valley 2 v Abergwili 3
Abergwili started 2012 with a good solid performance and more importantly three points against a strong Towy Valley line up. In what can only be described as tough playing conditions both sides struggled to take control of the game and Towt Valley were fortunate to go into half time a goal to the good in a first half of limited chances.
The second half was a different story with Abergwili sponsored by Brolicks bitumen ltd beginning to stamp their authority on the game and despite falling a further goal behind. Good work by Rhodri Williams on the left wing created two goals in the space of five minutes firstly with Dan Carter challenging well to pull one back and thenSteve Carmody equalising with a cooly taken header.
With time running out Abergwili looked the more likely to steal the winner and in the last minute Dan Carter broke down the right and put in a superb cross for Mathew Rolwands to tap in at the far post to secure three points for the travelling side. Special mention to Peter Rees in the Abergwili goal who showed some excellent handling skills in very difficult conditions for a goalkeeper.
Abergwili 3 v Penllergaer 5
Abergwili tasted defeat in their opening fixture of the 2011/12 season. It wasn't all doom and gloom for the villagers as their young side showed glimpses of quality that could see them do well this season.
Abergwili started the match with no fewer than five under 19 year old players and also 4 players from the village itself but found themselves 2 goals down in the early exchanges due to early season naivety and lack of concentration. Rhys Elias gave gwili a lifeline just before half time with a superb strike from all of 30 yards.
The second half so Abergwili dominate possession and they were awarded a penalty after 60 minutes which skipper Aled Williams slotted home with confidence. As Gwili pressed for the winner they conceded another goal only for Jacob Evans to draw them level.
With time running out Abergwili should have been awarded another penalty only for the ref to decide the foul was committed outside the box, moments later penllergaer stole the points with two quick goals in the dying seconds.
Despite this early defeat there are plenty of promising signs in this Abergwili team and also a reserve team which has an abundance o youth and experience which shows that the club is as strong as ever.
